Abstract

This is a book about young people-youth and emerging adults. The contributors in this volume investigate the religious and spiritual lives of young people, especially as they relate to inclinations to do good for others. People are increasingly interested in, concerned about, and excited for the generational changes occurring to faith and giving, as young people become adults. Emerging adulthood and the millennial generation receive considerable scholarly and public press attention. Prior generations wonder: What will happen to the future of faith and giving, and how can we help the new generation emerge into adult leaders? Younger generations wonder: How can we reshape the future of faith and giving, and how can existing religious and civic organizations respond to younger generations? This edited volume is the result of a special issue that invited social scientific insights on responses to these questions. The background for this volume, summarized below, is the evolving life course developmental processes, as well as the culmination of numerous social and cultural changes in recent decades and their implications for socialization of religiosity, spirituality, and generosity. The included chapters focus on the faith and giving of youth and emerging adults, in the United States and internationally. The emphasis is on research that contributes breadth to social scientific understandings of religion, charitable giving, volunteering, generosity, youth, and emerging adults. We are especially interested in trends related to participation in religious and civic organizations, including changing cultural structures, beliefs, and orientations to faith and giving in less formal or non-organizational contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

Spiritual Shakespeares is the first book to explore the scope for reading Shakespeare spiritually in the light of contemporary theory and current world events. Ewan Fernie has brought together an exciting cast of critics in order to respond to the 'religious turn' in recent literary theory and to the spiritualized politics of terrorism and the 'War on Terror'. Exploring a genuinely new perspective within Shakespeare Studies, the volume suggests that experiencing the spiritual intensities of the plays could lead us back to dramatic intensity as such. It tests spirituality from a political perspective, as well as subjecting politics to an unusual spiritual critique. Amongst its controversial and provocative arguments is the idea that a consideration of spirituality might point the way forward for materialist criticism. Reaching across and beyond literary studies to offer challenging and powerful contributions from leading scholars, this book offers unique readings of some very familiar plays.

Abstract

This volume sets out to explore the world of domestic devotions and is premised on the assumption that the home was a central space of religious practice and experience throughout the early modern world. The contributions to this book, which deal with themes dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, tell of the intimate relationship between humans and the sacred within the walls of the home. The volume demonstrates that the home cannot be studied in isolation: the seventeen essays, that encompass religious history, the histories of art and architecture, material culture, literary history, and social and cultural history, instead point individually and collectively to the porosity of the home and its connectedness with other institutions and broader communities.

Abstract

What role does religion play at the end of life in Japan? Spiritual Ends draws on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with hospice patients, chaplains, and medical workers to provide an intimate portrayal of how spiritual care is provided to the dying in Japan. Timothy O. Benedict uses both local and cross-cultural perspectives to show how global conversations on concepts like spirituality and the practice of spiritual care are being appropriated and reinterpreted in Japanese contexts. Benedict relates these findings to a longer story of how Japanese religious groups have pursued vocational roles in medical institutions as a means to demonstrate a so-called "healthy" role in society. By paying attention to how care for the kokoro (heart or mind) is key to the practice of spiritual care, this book enriches conventional understandings of religious identity in Japan, while offering a valuable East Asian perspective to global conversations on the ways religion, spirituality, and medicine intersect at death.

Abstract

Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398) belongs to the early 'Modern Devotion'. This is what the 'renewed innocence' movement, which arose around 1375 in Deventer, was inspired by Geert Grote and Florens Radewijns. They developed a reform program that focused on the spiritual transformation of man. Gerard Zerbolt played a prominent role as a brother of the common life. He led an intensive book production, worked for ecclesiastical recognition of the brotherhood and mastered her charisma. He wrote two leading manuals for the spiritual way. More than Grote and Radewijns, Gerard Zerbolt laid the foundation for an own spirituality of the Modern Devotion. The spiritualibus ascensionibus had not yet been translated into modern Dutch. The Middle Dutch translation already bore the title Spiritual Ascensions. This book describes the way of man who wants to return from the resemblance with his Creator to the original parable. Against the vices that can infuse people, Gerard Zerbolt places the virtues as counter forces. His writings contain all the elements to help us as people of our time to achieve a new image of humanity and a new vision of society.
